Guidance to entrance examination for master and Ph.D course

■Examination

The entrance examination for the master’s program is conducted by each of the basic subjects (math, physics, English) and specialized subjects (short essay, dictation). The range of questions for the basic subjects is limited to the general curriculum of science and technology university education, so that examinees with various backgrounds can take the exam. In addition, essay assignments in specialized subjects are designed so that examinees can demonstrate their individuality and answer without being biased to a particular specialty. As a result, we are accepting human resources who are actively crossing existing academic disciplines and aim for cutting-edge research.
The doctoral program entrance examination is a specialized subject (oral) exam for those who wish to enter the master’s program, and the basic subjects (math, physics, English) and specialized subjects (oral) for those who wish to enter from other than this major. We carry out by each examination.
About 70% of all students who take the master’s program are from other universities than the University of Tokyo, and we are promoting academic fusion by accepting students with diverse backgrounds. Most of the students who enter the doctoral program are from the master’s program of this major, but about 10% of them are enrolled from graduate schools of other universities or other majors of this university. About 10 to 20% of international students go to the doctoral course.
